Chemotherapy Drugs Cost and Options

Cancer cells grow by dividing in a disorderly and uncontrolled way. Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to treat cancers. However, chemotherapy is rarely used in isolation and is often paired with surgery, radiotherapy, immunotherapy or a combination of these. Indeed different chemotherapy drugs work in different ways. And interfere with the cancer cells at different phases of their growth. Therefore, a combination of drugs is often used.

Chemotherapy uses cytotoxic drugs to destroy cancer cells. A common feature of all chemotherapy pills and drugs is that they kill cancer cells through a process called apoptosis. The drugs cause the cancer cells to undergo a type of forced suicide, a programmed death. This is where the drug does so much damage that the cell realizes it can’t repair or function properly and shuts itself down.

In this article you will be informed about the Chemotherapy Medications / drugs, how these medicines work, the side effects of chemotherapy drugs and the cost of cancer treatment drugs from one of our distributors.

The severe side effects associated with chemotherapy are due to the drugs’ poor selectivity for cancerous tissue over healthy tissue as the chemotherapy medicines kill healthy cells along with cancerous cells.

Types Of Chemotherapy Medications:

Drugs for chemotherapy and cancer treatment as a whole can be very expensive. The cost of Chemotherapy pills as part of treatment constitutes very large portion of the costs while delivering treatment. However, chemotherapy uses different types of drugs to treat many different types of cancers. It is most commonly given as an injection into a vein or as tablets or capsules. The guidance on what drugs should be used for each cancer type, their dose, and what other treatments should be given is decided and informed by the team of doctors depending upon various factors.

Either, chemotherapy can be used to shrink tumours before surgery or radiotherapy; this is called neo-adjuvant chemotherapy. Otherwise, chemotherapy is given after surgery or radiotherapy to clear out any remaining cancer cells. This is adjuvant chemotherapy. However, the drug dose a patient receives is usually based on their body surface area, which is a number derived from a patient’s height and weight.

How Chemotherapy Medicines Work:

The drugs work in all phases of the human body cell cycle and are used to treat many different cancers, including cancers of the lung, breast, and ovary as well as leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin disease, multiple myeloma, sarcoma etc.

Hundreds of chemotherapy medications are used to treat cancers – either alone or in combination with other drugs or treatments. These drugs are very different in their chemical composition, the way they are taken, their usefulness in treating specific forms of cancers and their side effects.

Since, chemo drugs cannot differentiate between healthy cells and cancer cells, normal cells are damaged along with the cancer cells and this causes chemotherapy drug side effects. Therefore, the doctor has to plan the treatment to achieve a right balance between killing the cancer cells to cure or control the disease and spare the normal cells to lessen side effects.

Chemotherapy medications are grouped into families based on how they affect cancer cells. For example, some drugs attack the cell’s DNA, where its generic code is stored, and stop it being copied and reproduced by the cell. Alkylating agents in these drugs keep the cell from reproducing by damaging its DNA. In contrast, other drugs attack a component of cells called microtubules. These act as a type of skeleton which allows cells to hold their shape and move.

Cancer Cells And Drugs for Cancer Treatment:

Cancer cells tend to form new cells more quickly than normal cells and this makes them a better target for chemotherapy pills. Chemotherapy drugs target cells at different phases of the process of forming new cells, called the cell cycle. The doze quantity and frequency which is most likely to work for a patient is decided by the doctor keeping the timing of cell phase in mind.

Cancers continue to grow because they have become resistant to drug treatment, it is because they have found ways to repair, or get around, the damage caused by the drugs. The doctor then alters the drug or the dosage monitoring the progress of the patient. It is mandatory to be under medical supervision and observation when cancer treatment is on.

Chemotherapy Drugs side effects:

Side Effects of Chemotherapy includes nausea, vomiting, fatigue, hair loss, poor kidney, liver functions, tingling in legs and arms

Most patients who have chemotherapy will experience severe side effects. These may include nausea and vomiting, fatigue, tingling in their arms and legs, hearing loss, hair loss, poor kidney and liver function, and an increased susceptibility to infection. This is because the drugs attack any part of the body that grows quickly, including hair follicles, the lining of the mouth, stomach and intestines, and bone marrow.

Currently, chemotherapy medications are selected for patients based on the location of the cancer. Scientists are continually working to find better and safer chemotherapy pills as well as better ways to deliver the drugs we currently use. Therefore, they are developing methods to select combinations of drugs that are more likely to work based on genetic profiling of the patient’s cancer cells. As they learn more about the underlying biology of cancers, they can find targets inside cancer cells that are not found in normal cells.

By designing drugs that target these differences scientists shall create drugs that will be free from side effects or with minimal side effects. Probably, over the next decade we will see significant advances in the development of personalized medicine in cancer treatment.
