Need of Knee MRI Scan:

Knee MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging) is used to get detailed images of the structures within the knee joint. It helps to diagnose pain, swelling or bleeding in and around the knee joint. MRI uses a high power magnetic field, radio waves and computer to produce detailed images of organs, soft tissues, bone and all internal structures. MRI is an advance technology that shows internal organs, blood vessels, muscles, joints, tumours, areas of infection, and more – with good clarity without exposure to radiation.

The images can be seen on a computer monitor and if required can be e-transmitted if required.

Indications for knee MRI:

MRI of the knee may be useful to evaluate specific clinical scenarios, including, but not limited to:

  • Arthritis: inflammatory, infectious
  • Prolonged, refractory or unexplained knee pain
  • Acute trauma
  • Suspected meniscal tear
  • Suspected fracture
  • Anterior/posterior cruciate ligament damage
  • Locking – failure to achieve full knee extension
  • Suspected effusion
  • Mechanical knee symptoms: catching, locking, snapping, crepitus
  • Tibiofemoral and/or patellofemoral instability: chronic, recurrent, subacute, acute
  • dislocation and subluxation
  • Tibiofemoral and/or patellofemoral malalignment
  • Limited or painful range of motion
  • Previous injury with painless knee instability
  • Swelling, enlargement, mass or atrophy
  • Iliotibial band friction syndrome
  • Patients for whom diagnostic or therapeutic arthroscopy is planned
  • Patients with recurrent, residual, or new symptoms following knee surgery

As MRI scanners don’t use any type of radiation, it’s considered safe. If you have implants which contain metal then the magnets from MRI machine may cause some problems with screws or pins etc. Some people might have allergic reaction to the contrast dye used in MRI. However, these reactions are mild in nature and can be easily controlled by medicines.

Preparation:

Before MRI make sure to tell your doctor about:

  • Details about your medical history.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Have been diagnosed with Kidney problems.
  • Have suffered any allergic reactions in the past
  • If you’re claustrophobic or scared of closed spaces.

The different types of MRI are Open MRI,1.5 Tesla and 3 Tesla MRI. Depending on patients condition, a doctor specifies which MRI is to be conducted.

If a contrast is require, it will be administered to you, either by mouth or you will have intravenous (IV) injected into the vein. The contrast will make your MRI images clearer and show better details.

MRI conducted with contrast are not considered safe for pregnant women. Breastfeeding mothers should stop breastfeeding for about two days after the test.

During the MRI scan:

You are required to wear loose fitting clothes or hospital gown for the scan. All jewelry and body peircing are to be removed.
In case of contrast MRI and intravenous (IV) line will be inserted in your arm to inject the dye into the blood.

Then the MRI technician will ask you to lie on your back on a padded table. This table can slide in and out of the machine. Your knee position is adjusted with pillows or straps to make your knee comfortable during the scan. This table slides inside and the scanning process is started. You are required to keep yourself still during the entire scanning process.

The technician is in a separate room and is able to communicate with you over microphone. He may ask you to hold your breath few times during the process.

During the scanning process MRI machine makes loud tapping noises. Nowadays some labs also provide earplugs or headphones with music which helps the patient to relax.

The process usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. Once the technician assures that the clear images are captured, the scanning process is over.

You can change and resume your normal activities. However if you were given sedatives for controlling anxiety then you will have to wait till the effect of sedatives is over.

The radiologist normally analyse the images and gives the report in a day or two. Based on these reports, your doctor would advise you the further course of action.
